Learn to Play Guitar

Most pop and rock songs feature an electric guitar. This instrument had been used earlier in some country, jazz, and blues music, but it particularly suited the loud, pronounced rhythms of rock. The electric guitar differs from an acoustic guitar in the way the sound comes out. The sound of an electric guitar travels by wire to an amplifier, which projects the sound. There are three main types of electric guitar. They are:

  • lead guitar, which has six strings and plays the rhythm of a song

  • rhythm guitar, which has six strings and plays the rhythm of a song

  • bass guitar, which has four strings and plays the bass line of a song

The guitar's wide appeal as a folk instrument led to its current preeminent role in rock and pop music. The instrument has a long history and, although as a classical instrument it has hardly figured in the orchestra, its solo repertoire is extensive.
